Tilting the Odds: Manual Tilt to Improve Rehabilitation Outcomes

Individuals with neurologic disabilities deal with a number of challenges in completing activities of daily living. One of the most significant of those challenges is acquiring a mobility device that allows them to maximize their independence with both mobility and performance of their activities of daily living. For some, the adaptive equipment typically provided may be inadequate, limiting their potential for full participation and independence.

Course Description

Neurologic disabilities such as CP, ALS, MS, and SCI figure more prominently in discussions about the impact and importance of complex rehabilitation technology than CVA, yet the annual stroke occurrence rates in Canada have increased to 108,707. Moreover, stroke reduces mobility in more than half of those over age 65. Funding qualification requirements and reimbursement cuts may negatively influence the caliber of wheeled mobility devices CVA survivors receive. Many obtain an upright, manual wheelchair.

It is well documented that manual tilt-in-space wheelchairs provide seat angle adjustments that can facilitate pressure relief, postural control, and activity specific positioning, but these chairs are often not prescribed due to limitations related to independent propulsion, weight, and transport.

This presentation will explore the research supporting the use of tilt. Topics will include: how changes in seat angle affect posture and pressure distribution, seat height and angle characteristics that impact self-propulsion, the relationship between independent mobility and incidence of pressure ulcers, and how changes in seat angle can influence activities of daily living. The clinical justification and documentation requirements for funding reimbursement will be outlined, and participants will be educated on options to achieve the clinical benefits of manual tilt while enabling self-propulsion and transport.

1. Mobility Algorithm: Clinical Considerations for Mobility Base and Seating Function Selection

Course Description:   Individuals with chronic medical conditions and long-term disabilities, who have a permanent need for a wheelchair, require a comprehensive, detailed evaluation of their physical, functional and environmental needs. This evaluation allows clinicians and ATP suppliers to make appropriate Assistive Technology recommendations for a successful outcome.

This course will examine the algorithmic approach to mobility base and power positioning component selection while also discussing key objective measures and how those measures lead to equipment recommendations. This framework will provide clinicians with the tools necessary to effectively evaluate and document the medical need for MAE intervention and assist the supplier ATP in matching an individual’s identified needs to the technology interventions.

2. The Case for Wheels: An Overview for Selecting the Clinically Appropriate Power

Course Description:   The recommendation of power wheelchair mobility can be very challenging within the Complex Rehab market these days.

There are many different choices for the consumer to choose from. Drive wheel configuration choice can have a major impact on how the wheelchair is utilized and how the power wheelchair functions for the individual. This class will provide the participant with an overview of the information they will need to assist in the selection of the correct power base for the individual’s specific needs.
